Privacy Policy

There is nothing to sign up for. We do not run analytics, advertising, or social media scripts.

When you load a page, our hosting provider, Netlify, receives what every web server receives: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time. Netlify keeps those logs for its own operations and security under its own privacy policy. We do not add analytics, advertising, or social media scripts on top of that, so we do not build a picture of who visits thedatabulletin.com.

Every chart asks a small function on thedatabulletin.com for its series. That function fetches the numbers from the agency (FRED, the BLS, the FBI, the EIA, NOAA, NASA, the WHO, the World Bank, EM-DAT, the OECD, the Census Bureau) using our own credentials, caches the answer, and passes it to your browser. Your browser never talks to those agencies directly, and they never see your visit. What reaches an agency is a request from our server for a public dataset.

The States page tries to open on your own state. To do that it asks our host which U.S. state your connection appears to be in. Netlify works this out from the connection itself at the edge; no outside service is called, no browser permission is requested, and the answer is not stored or logged by us. If the host is unsure, the page simply starts with no state selected.

Two things are kept in your browser's localStorage: whether you chose light or dark mode, and your best run in the Data Lab game. Neither is sent to us. Clearing site data for thedatabulletin.com removes both.

The site's typefaces and its chart library are served from thedatabulletin.com, so no font or script provider sees your visit.

We set no cookies. Netlify may set one for its own routing or security purposes; it does not identify you to us.

If you email us a question or a correction, we keep the email so we can answer it and, if a correction results, record what changed. We do not add you to a list.

The Data Bulletin is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Since we collect nothing from anyone, the only data to remove would be in your own browser.

If we start doing something different, such as adding accounts, analytics, or a newsletter, this page changes first and the date at the top moves. We do not send notices about policy changes because we hold no addresses to send them to.
