    About This Data
The FBI publishes, for each state and for the nation, a monthly count of offenses reported by participating agencies and the population those agencies cover. The figure here is the twelve months of a year added together, so it is offenses reported per 100,000 people in the areas that reported. A year appears only when all twelve months are published and the reporting agencies covered at least 75 percent of the population. The FBI also publishes annual estimates that fill in for agencies which did not report; those run about one percent apart from these. Violent crime counts homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime counts burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson. States report through different systems and with different coverage, so the chart shows each state's own trend beside the national line.

    About This Data
Property crime is far more common than violent crime and is counted the same way: offenses known to police, per 100,000 people in the areas that reported, twelve months added into a year. Larceny makes up most of it.
